Paper is lighter and flexible, cardstock is heavier and stiffer, and board is the rigid or layered material used for demanding covers and packaging. GSM (grams per square metre) measures weight, not coating, stiffness or printer compatibility.
| Family | Typical weights | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | 80 to about 130gsm | Documents, writing paper, notebook interiors, inserts |
| Cardstock | 160 to 350gsm | Certificates, cards, covers, invitations, packaging |
| Board | 620 to 1000gsm and up | Rigid covers, mounts, displays, packaging structures |
See the GSM comparison chart for what each weight suits.
A printer's maximum supported weight decides what you can print on. Heavy board is usually cut, mounted or bound rather than fed through a home printer. See will this paper or cardstock work in my printer?
No. Cardstock is a heavy sheet you can often print on. Board is thicker and rigid.
