2:1 vs 3:1 Wire Binding Pitch Explained | Valenna

2:1 vs 3:1 Wire Binding Pitch

Pitch is the number of binding holes per inch. A 2:1 punch makes two per inch and a 3:1 punch makes three. The two patterns are not interchangeable.

๐Ÿ” The difference

PitchPatternTypical use
3:1Tighter, about 34 holes along an A4 edgeThinner notebooks and planners, smaller diameters
2:1Wider, about 23 holes along an A4 edgeThicker reports and manuals, larger diameters
โš ๏ธ Warning: a 3:1 punch and 2:1 wire do not line up, even when both are labelled A4. Match the wire to the machine and the existing hole pattern. To check, read the machine label or punch a test sheet and count the holes along the A4 edge.

Wire diameter and page capacity are separate choices, based on the finished book thickness. See the size and capacity chart.

๐Ÿ“˜ Replacement notebook covers

Valenna supplies replacement covers unpunched by default. Request 2:1 or 3:1 punching in Notes. Rebinding needs a suitable new wire, because the old closed wire cannot be reused. See preparing cover holes and binding.

โ“ Frequently asked questions

Can 2:1 wire go in a 3:1 machine?

No. The hole spacing and loop count differ.
