Choose matte for text-heavy pieces, writing surfaces and reduced glare. Choose glossy for image-led work where shine and vivid colour are wanted.
| Matte | Glossy | Uncoated | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Soft, low glare | Shiny, high contrast | Natural |
| Best for | Certificates, invitations, forms, covers | Photos, promotional cards, image-led flyers | Letterheads, journals, crafts |
Glossy paper reflects more light, so photographs, dark tones and saturated colours usually look brighter and more contrast-rich. Matte paper diffuses light, so colour looks softer while text stays comfortable to read with less glare. The result also depends on the printer, the ink or toner, the colour profile and the coating.
Neither. Choose the finish for the finished item, not for how premium it sounds.
