Custom Printed Envelopes and Notecards in South Africa: Sizes, Stock, Artwork and How to Order

Valenna prints two paper products from your own artwork: branded envelopes (C6, C5 or C4, kraft or white) and double-sided notecards in three sizes, with plain or matching custom-printed envelopes. There is no minimum order for envelopes, so you can test one before a bigger run. Envelopes start from R3.15 and notecards from R2.12.

Use this guide to choose the right size and stock, understand how quantities work and prepare your files.

Kraft or white?

  • 🟤 Kraft gives a natural, tactile look but takes black artwork only. Use bold lines and clear type for the best contrast.
  • ⚪ White is a neutral surface for full-colour logos, patterns and event artwork.
⚠️ Warning: do not prepare full-colour artwork for a kraft envelope. It will print in black, not as it looks on screen. Choose white for colour. See kraft vs white envelopes.

Printing the front and back

The front is the main design area. Leave clear room for the recipient address, postage and postal marks. Put rear branding at the bottom centre of the back, not on the flap, and keep it clear of folds and seams. See front vs back envelope printing.

How to prepare the envelope PDF

  1. Supply one two-page PDF: page 1 is the front and page 2 is the back.
  2. Use the exact C6, C5 or C4 size and matching orientation on both pages.
  3. Keep important front artwork at least 30 mm from the edges. This is a safe zone, not bleed.
  4. Do not add bleed.
  5. Use vector graphics or 300 DPI images, embed or outline fonts, and prepare white-envelope artwork in CMYK and kraft artwork in solid black.
  6. Check that page 2 is not upside down relative to page 1.

🃏 Notecards and greeting cardnotes

Custom notecards are printed on 385gsm cardstock, double-sided, with a glossy front and a matte back. They work for thank-you cards in parcels, gift tags, business notes, invitations and branded packaging inserts.

SizeOrder in multiples ofBest for
5 × 10 cm12Compact gift tags, packaging inserts and short messages
7 × 10 cm8Thank-you notes and short handwritten messages
10 × 14 cm4Longer messages and more detailed designs
📝 Note: the multiples follow how many cards fit on one A4 production sheet. Design at the exact finished size instead of resizing one generic layout.

Envelopes for your notecards

The envelope is chosen separately from the card: none, a plain envelope that keeps the focus on the card, or a custom-printed envelope that carries your design on the outside for a coordinated gifting look. See notecard cardstock and envelope options.

How to prepare notecard files

  • ✅ Create the front and back as two separate files at the exact finished size and same orientation. Do not combine them into one document.
  • ✅ Name each pair clearly, such as design-01-front and design-01-back. For several designs, keep every pair together and state the quantity per design.
  • ✅ Keep important text, logos and borders away from the cut edge, and extend edge-to-edge backgrounds beyond the finished edge.
  • ✅ Export sharp artwork at print resolution, and check each side is assigned correctly (glossy front, matte back).

💰 Pricing, quantities and samples

Price and turnaround depend on the exact size, stock, printed sides, envelope choice and quantity, so configure the product online to see the current price. Do not apply one product's minimum or turnaround to the other: envelopes have no minimum order, while notecards follow the multiples above. Order a small test first to check fit, orientation and logo position. Read quantities and turnaround.

💡 Tip: pair a custom notecard with a custom envelope in the same design for a branded unboxing moment, and order one set first to check how the front and back sit together.

⏱️ How long does it take?

Production time depends on your configuration and quantity. At checkout, look for Expedited Processing for urgent orders; it shortens the production queue for eligible carts and is separate from courier delivery. See shipping fees and delivery times.

🛒 How to order

  1. Choose your product: custom envelopes or custom notecards.
  2. Select size, stock and, for notecards, your envelope choice.
  3. Enter the quantity (notecards in the right multiple).
  4. Upload your files in the format above, add to cart, choose shipping and pay.
